Ever wondered why a necklace looks stunning on your friend but washed-out on you — even though it's the exact same piece? The answer is almost never the design. It's your skin undertone, and matching jewellery to it is the single highest-impact styling decision you can make.
This guide shows you how to find your undertone in under a minute, and what to wear once you know. Prefer to skip the tests? Our free Skin Tone Jewellery Matcher tells you instantly from a quick quiz or a photo.
Skin tone vs. skin undertone — they're different
Your skin tone is how light or deep your complexion is (fair, wheatish, dusky, deep). Your undertone is the subtle hue beneath the surface, and it stays the same even when you tan. There are three: warm (golden, peachy, yellow), cool (pink, red, bluish), and neutral (a balance of both). Undertone — not tone — is what decides whether gold or silver flatters you.
4 quick tests to find your undertone
1. The vein test. Look at the veins on your inner wrist in natural light. Green-ish veins = warm undertone. Blue or purple = cool. Can't tell / a mix = neutral.
2. The jewellery test. Hold gold against one side of your face and silver against the other. Whichever makes your skin look brighter and more even is your match. Gold = warm, silver = cool, both look good = neutral.
3. The white-paper test. Hold a sheet of plain white paper next to your bare face. If your skin looks yellowish/golden against it, you're warm; if it looks pink/rosy, you're cool.
4. The sun test. Do you tan easily and rarely burn? Usually warm. Burn easily and tan slowly? Usually cool.
What to wear once you know
Warm undertones: lean into yellow gold and antique-gold finishes. Traditional Indian styles were practically made for you — Kundan, temple jewelry, and meenakari all glow against warm skin. Gemstone colours like coral, amber, emerald, and deep red are your friends.
Cool undertones: silver, white-gold, and platinum tones flatter you most. Try oxidized silver, pearls, and delicate minimalist pieces. Gemstones in blue, purple, pink, and clear/white look crisp and bright.
Neutral undertones: lucky you — almost everything works. Rose gold is especially universal, and you can move freely across layered necklaces and chokers in any finish.
